What "Know Your Customer" means
Know Your Customer (KYC) is the standard process by which a financial service confirms that a client is a real, identifiable person, and that the information provided at registration is accurate.
In practice, KYC at NairaRefinery AI means we collect and confirm a small set of basic facts about you: your full legal name, your date of birth, your country of residence, your contact details and the payment method you intend to use. We compare the details you typed into the sign-up form with the details shown on the documents you upload.
What we do not do
We never request your internet banking credentials, complete card PIN, or device access permissions. Personnel from our organization will not solicit these details under any circumstances. Any communication asking for them originates elsewhere and should be submitted via the abuse reporting mechanism.
What "anti-money laundering" means
Anti-money laundering (AML) is the set of internal controls a financial service uses to prevent its platform from being used to move the proceeds of crime, to finance illegal activity, or to disguise the true origin of funds.
AML procedures extend beyond simple one-time identity verification. They encompass account risk categorization, screening for sanctions and politically-exposed persons, monitoring of atypical transaction activity, documentation requirements, internal flagging of questionable transactions and, where law mandates it, filing with relevant regulatory bodies.
Where AML rules and a client instruction conflict, the AML rules take priority. That can mean a delayed transaction, a request for additional documents, or a restricted account until the matter is resolved.
Why verification is required
- 01
Legal obligation
Services that hold or transmit client funds are generally required to identify their clients before providing the service. This is not optional and applies to every account without exception.
- 02
Protecting your money
Account verification establishes a verified owner's identity. This substantially reduces the risk of unauthorized access, and ensures funds can only be sent to a payment channel previously confirmed as yours.
- 03
Keeping the platform clean
Screening excludes sanctioned entities and opaque corporate structures from our service, thereby safeguarding all other users on the platform.
- 04
Faster payouts later
An account that has undergone upfront verification avoids additional checks during withdrawal processing, reducing friction when it matters most.
Which documents are accepted
We ask for up to three categories of document. Files should be colour images or PDFs, fully in frame, unedited, with all four corners and all text legible.
1. Identity document
A government-issued document that shows your photograph, full name, date of birth, document number and expiry date. Commonly accepted types are a passport, a national identity card, or a driving licence where it is issued as a photographic identity document. The document must be valid and not expired.
2. Proof of address
A current document, normally from the past several months, displaying your name and current residence address matching your registered account. Standard documents include a utility bill, bank or payment card statement, local government notice or property tax letter, or formal correspondence from a governmental body. Postal addresses and residences registered to another party are not eligible.
3. Proof of payment method
Proof that the payment method is registered to you. For payment cards, this typically means a photograph of the card displaying your name, opening six digits and closing four digits and validity period, with intervening numbers and CVV obscured. For bank account transfers, a bank statement or payment confirmation bearing your name with the account number visible. For digital payment accounts, a profile screenshot displaying your name and wallet identifier.
Formats and file size
Maximum upload sizes, supported formats and supplementary document requirements appear within your account's verification portal. Non-English documents may require certified translation; our compliance department will advise if necessary.
The verification steps
- 01
Register
Create the account with your real legal name, date of birth, country of residence, email and phone number. Details that do not match your documents are the most common cause of delay.
- 02
Confirm contact details
Confirm your email address and, where requested, your phone number. This proves the contact channels belong to you.
- 03
Upload your identity document
Provide scanned pages containing your image and identifying information. Certain procedures involve a brief identity confirmation or facial verification to validate the document belongs to its holder.
- 04
Upload proof of address
Upload a recent qualifying document in your name at the address on file.
- 05
Confirm the payment method
Provide proof of the instrument you will use to fund and to receive withdrawals.
- 06
Screening and review
The compliance unit evaluates your submission, applies required sanctions and financial crime screening, and either authorizes your account or requests modifications.
- 07
Confirmation
You receive a notification once the account status changes. The current status is always visible in the verification area of your account.
How long a check takes
Typical complete applications receive review within several hours through two business days. Submissions requiring additional examination, translation services or supporting materials may require extended processing.
Turnaround varies based on application volume, document quality and whether advanced compliance checks are required. Your applicable review window and present document status appear in your account dashboard - this displayed timeline is authoritative over any other estimate.
- Clear, complete, unedited uploads are reviewed fastest.
- Requests submitted outside business hours are queued for the next working day.
- Enhanced review, where required, adds time and is communicated to you.
Why a check can be rejected
A rejection is usually a document problem, not a judgement about you. In most cases you can simply re-upload and the account is approved on the second attempt.
| Reason | How to fix it |
|---|---|
| Image blurred, cropped or glare-covered | Re-shoot in daylight, flat on a dark surface, all four corners visible. |
| Document expired | Upload a currently valid document. |
| Personal name or birth date differs from registered account information | Update your registered name, or substantiate a legal name modification with official documentation. |
| Proof of address too old or not in your name | Supply a current acceptable document delivered to your registered location. |
| Payment method belongs to a third party | Use an instrument in your own name - third-party funding is not accepted. |
| File edited, cropped to hide data, or a screenshot of a screen | Submit an unmodified original image or PDF. |
| Residence in an excluded jurisdiction | Account establishment is prohibited; consult our regulatory information page for further details. |
Should a determination be ambiguous, reach out to support requesting clarification. We will furnish explanation where permitted by law.
Ongoing transaction monitoring
Verification is not a one-time event. Accounts and transactions are monitored for as long as the relationship lasts.
What is monitored
Account inflows and outflows, payment method substitutions, location or communication adjustments, operations inconsistent with your initial profile, and activities identified by our filtering systems.
What can happen as a result
- A request for refreshed documents or an explanation of the source of funds.
- A temporary hold on a specific transaction while it is reviewed.
- Amendment of limits shown in your account dashboard.
- Restriction or closure of the account where the law requires it.
Records
Identity records and financial transaction documentation are maintained per statutory obligations following account closure, and are managed pursuant to our Privacy Policy. In certain circumstances the law prevents us from telling a client that a report has been made.
Your obligations
- Give accurate, current and complete information, and keep it up to date.
- Use only your own funds and your own payment instruments - never someone else's.
- Keep one account only, and keep your credentials private.
- Submit requested materials by the deadline specified in the notice.
- Tell us promptly if you change country of residence, legal name or payment method.
- Notify us of suspected illicit account activity without delay.
Submitting falsified or altered documents is a serious matter. It leads to closure of the account and, where applicable law requires, notification of the competent authority.
Where to ask questions
If anything on this page is unclear, or you want to know the exact status of your own verification, ask us before uploading again.
Who reviews my documents?
A trained compliance reviewer. Files are stored on restricted systems, and access is limited to staff who need it for the check.
Can I start before I am verified?
Account creation and basic features are accessible, though deposit, investing and fund transfers require successful verification completion as indicated in your account.
Do I have to verify again later?
Possibly. Documents expire, addresses change and periodic refresh is a normal part of AML compliance. We will contact you if a refresh is needed.
How do I contact the compliance team?
Use the contact route on our contact page and mention "KYC" or "verification" in your message, together with the email address on your account. Please do not send document images by unsecured channels - upload them in the account area instead.
Get verified once, cleanly
Ninety per cent of delays come from three things: a blurred photo, an out-of-date address document, and a payment method in someone else's name. Fix those and most checks pass first time.
Need help with a document?
Our customer service department can specify exactly which submission was unsuccessful and the specific reason.
- Check the verification area of your account first.
- Please reach out to our support team using the email address associated with your account.
